ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Cornell's men's lacrosse team tightened the defensive screws over the final three quarters of Wednesday's 6-3 season-opening road win over Augustana.
It was a successful Cornell coaching debut for
Jack Spallone, who watched his Rams (1-0) hold the home team scoreless for the final 39:57 of regulation.
The Rams trailed 2-0 after one period and then handled the Vikings (2-2) the rest of the night. Cornell scored the final five goals.
Junior goalie
Nathan Diveley posted eight saves in the complete-game victory. Six of his stops came after intermission.
Charley Kobets led Cornell's attack with three goals, including two in the fourth period.
Tyler Foster,
Brandon Evilsizer and
Kayden Kuan all found the back of the net once for the Rams, who received two assists from
Kaden Weaver.
Ben Schwartz and
Brandon Warnke collected five ground balls apiece.
Coming up – The Rams play an exhibition game against Clarke at 5 p.m. Friday in Dubuque.
