ORLANDO, Fla. - In a very busy final two days of spring break, Cornell's men's tennis team competed in three different duals, and came out on top in two of the three. The Rams earned victories over Northwestern (MN) 4-3, and Marymount 6-1, while dropping a 7-0 decision to Carthage.
The Rams (9-7) opened things with a morning matchup on Monday against the Eagles. Cornell narrowly dropped the doubles point with the lone win coming at No. 3 by
Zachary Ong and
Sam Cumicek 7-6.
Needing four singles matches for the dual, the Rams ended up doing just that.
Jack Saunders, Ong,
Henry Lambley and
Drew Campbell all captured singles wins to secure the team match at the Nos. 2-5 spots.
In the night cap on Monday, Cornell took the court against a strong Carthage squad that swept the doubles and singles matches.
The final match in Florida came against Marymount University. The Rams swept all three doubles matches for the first time all break. No. 1 duo of Trent Devore and Saunders won 6-2. Ong and Lambley secured their No. 2 match win 6-3, while Gavin Collyott and Matthew Oshiro cruised to a 6-1 win at No. 3
The Rams captured all but one singles match in the six flights. Saunders, Ong, Campbell, Collyott and Oshiro all powered to wins in the Nos. 2-6 spots. Saunders needed a super tiebreak.
Ong, the newest member of the 100 career wins club, added four wins over the final two days of matches.
Coming up - The Rams return home on March 21 to hose Bethany Lutheran College and the University of Dubuque.
