Isaac vanWestrienen NCAA Indoor 3000m

VanWestrienen back on All-America podium, places 5th at 3000 meters

| By:
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The NCAA broadcaster billed the men's 3000-meter run the "marquee event" in Division III track & field this year. And Cornell's Isaac vanWestrienen had a front-pack view of it all.

VanWestrienen delivered yet another all-America performance Saturday, placing fifth in a loaded 20-man field at the NCAA Indoor Championships at Birmingham CrossPlex.

The Cornell senior passed two runners down the homestretch with a blistering 28.99-second final lap and crossed the line in 8:09.38.

A crowded fight for the No. 4-7 positions saw Lynchburg's returning all-American Chasen Hunt (8:09.12) barely hold on for fourth, followed by vanWestrienen, RPI's Evan Lacey (8:09.49) and Wartburg's Lance Sobaski (8:09.82).

The third time in the NCAA 3000 was a charm for vanWestrienen, who placed 15th in 2025 and 19th in 2024. VanWestrienen captured his second all-America award of the weekend, which included a seventh-place showing in Friday's 5000.

Now with five career NCAA medals on the track, vanWestrienen pulled even with Hall of Fame thrower John Martin (1992-94) as the most decorated men's track & field all-American in Cornell history.

Rowan's Seth Clevenger won Saturday's 3000 with a meet-record time of 7:54.92. SUNY Geneseo's Ryan Hagan was runner-up in 8:06.04.
