ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Cornell's five-time track & field all-American
Isaac vanWestrienen joined an exclusive list of NCAA Division III all-time greats in the outdoor 5000-meter run at Friday's Wash U Distance Carnival.
VanWestrienen ran the sixth-fastest outdoor time in Division III history with a blazing mark of 13:53.13. The senior finished second out of 232 competitors from all NCAA divisions.
VanWestrienen shattered his own school record by 12 seconds. He was among eight athletes in Friday's race who ran under the Francis Stadium facility record.
Drew Atkins, of Division II Northwest Missouri State, won the race in 13:40.86.
Junior
Jake Bach also represented the Rams Friday in the 1500, placing 27th out of 44 in 3:55.11.
On Saturday, Cornell's full squad opened the outdoor campaign at the 27-team Central Dutch Invitational in Pella.
Senior
Alyza Koppes turned in Cornell's best individual finish of the meet, placing fifth in the women's 1500 (4:47.70).
Mackenzie Engbert was 10th (4:54.55).
Jayda Carnes took sixth in the women's 400 (1:00.53).
Hailey Carolan was 10th in the 400 hurdles (1:08.98) and
Milar Little 10th in the 3000 (11:00.60).
On the men's side,
Jensen Meeker placed 11th in the 400 (50.0) and
Ethyn Chesnut crossed 11th in the 3000 (9:24.31).
Hadley Beaty finished 12th in the 200 (21.73) and was 13th in the 100 (10.84).
Coming up – The Rams host the Cornell Invitational next Saturday, April 4, at Van Metre Field at Ash Park. Competition begins at 10 a.m.
