Ellermeier, Rhoades pitch back-to-back shutouts in home sweep

MOUNT VERNON – In a tune-up before starting conference play, the Rams took only three hours to finish off the sweep of Buena Vista (6-18) Sunday at Van Metre Family Softball Field. Cornell won both games by an identical 8-0 score in five innings.

Lexi Ellermeier threw a complete game no-hitter in game one, allowing only three base runners. Ellermeier set down the first 11 batters before walking Jillian Garcia with two outs in the fourth inning. Ellermeier struck out one as she improved her record to 6-3.

Linnea Drever hit a two-run homer down the left field line with no outs in the bottom of the fifth to finish the game. Originally the third base umpire called the ball foul, but the home plate umpire overruled signaling home run setting off a celebration by the Rams (12-6).

Cornell out hit the Beavers 12-0 in game one. Brooke Furman led the Rams with three hits, scoring twice. Lauren Summers and Brianna Risley each had two hits.  Drever and Summers both knocked in two runs.

The Rams had four extra base hits with Furman and Summers each doubling and Risley tripled to go with Drever's round-tripper.

Also picking up a hit in game one was Alexa Corona, Peyton Souhrada, Elise Oleson and Corrin Kennedy.

In game two senior Daelynn Rhoades continued the strong pitching for the Rams, throwing a complete game shutout. Rhoades only allowed two hits as she improved her record to 4-1.

Corona went 3-for-3 with a double, scored two runs and added two RBIs to lead the Rams offense. Furman had two hits, scoring twice and adding two RBIs.

Souhrada, Kennedy, Oleson, Summers, Risley and Drever each contributed a hit for the Rams in game two, as they out hit Buena Vista 11-2.

Coming up – Rams begin conference play Saturday, April 4 with a doubleheader against Lake Forest at Van Metre Family Softball Field. First game starts at 1:00 pm.
