VERONA, Wis. – Cornell's women's lacrosse team had No. 3 seed Edgewood in a tie game deep into the third quarter before the Rams ran out of steam in Saturday's 11-5 loss in the quarterfinals of the NACC Tournament at Reddan Park.
The No. 6 seed Rams made their fourth consecutive postseason appearance under head coach
Meredith Meier. The team closed out the season at 5-11.
Edgewood (8-10) advances to a NACC semifinal matchup at No. 2 seed Aurora Wednesday in Aurora, Ill.
Cornell, which beat Edgewood 8-7 on April 16, had momentum on its side after
Ava Ferencz netted her third goal of the contest that put the Rams ahead 5-4 with 7:29 remaining in the third period.
The host Eagles responded with seven unanswered scores over the final 21 minutes to pull away. Edgewood led 6-5 after three quarters and struck five more times in the fourth. The Rams did not get off a shot attempt in the final period.
Ferencz finished a fine sophomore season with the three goals, one assist, two draw controls and three caused turnovers. She converted two of Cornell's three free position goals in the first quarter, after which the Rams led 3-2.
Brynn Miroslavich and
Alex Neely each scored one goal for the Rams. Miroslavich and
Ilsa Jeffery shared team-high honors with four ground balls. Jeffery also had three caused turnovers, padding her school-record career total in that category.
All-time saves leader
Hannah Miech added seven more stops to her final total, working all 60 minutes.
Edgewood was an efficient 17-of-22 on clears and held a 23-11 advantage in total shots.
