MOUNT VERNON – Cornell's women's soccer team had its hands full against three-time defending Midwest Conference champion Lake Forest, which entered Sunday's contest having outscored its opposition 21-2.
The undefeated Foresters showcased their high-octane attack with seven first-half goals en route to an 8-0 victory over the Rams at Armstrong Family Field at Mount Vernon High School.
The Rams (2-5 overall, 0-1 MWC) battled tough in the second half and held Lake Forest (7-0-1 overall, 1-0 MWC) scoreless over the final 29 minutes.
Cornell goalkeeper
Violet Fiers registered 12 saves in 51 minutes of constant pressure from the Foresters, who fired 39 shots on the day.
Sydney Newberg came on in relief and had one save while not allowing a goal.
Sophomore
Mia Belitz led Cornell's offense with two shots.
Eva Plathe and
Ana Munn Carstensen had one attempt apiece.
Coming up – The Rams are back in action Saturday against MWC foe Knox (3-4 overall, 1-0 MWC) for Mental Health Awareness Day. Game time is 1:30 p.m.
