MOUNT VERNON – Cornell's men's soccer team earned its first point in the Midwest Conference standings with a 1-1 draw against rival Knox at home Saturday on Youth Day.
The Rams (0-6-2 overall, 0-1-1 MWC) thoroughly outplayed Knox (2-4-3 overall, 1-1-1 MWC) in the second half, although couldn't unlock the 1-1 halftime tie. Cornell mounted many scoring threats with multiple near-misses at the goal.
The aggressive Rams fired 15 shots over the final 45 minutes and outshot the Prairie Fire in the match, 22-14.
Cornell snapped a three-match scoreless drought on a goal by sophomore
Kyriacos Photiou in the 26th minute. Photiou's first goal of the season was assisted by
Erwann Hiernaux and put the Rams ahead 1-0.
Knox evened the score at 1-1 on a header off a corner kick in the 36th minute.
Fox Wight tallied a team-high six shots for the Rams. Photiou,
Sam Burmeister and
Tadhg Thompson had three attempts apiece.
Carter Lampe had two shots on goal.
