MONMOUTH, Ill. – Cornell landed the first punch, although couldn't combat four consecutive strikes by Monmouth in a 4-1 Midwest Conference women's soccer loss Tuesday at Peacock Memorial Athletic Park.
Cornell came ready to play against the MWC-contending Fighting Scots (6-2 overall, 2-1 MWC). Senior
Ana Munn Carstensen gave the Rams momentum with her first collegiate goal at the 5-minute mark off an assist from first-year
Rebecca Huerth.
Cornell's early 1-0 lead was short lived as Monmouth squared the match at 1-1 in the sixth minute. The Fighting Scots forged ahead 2-1 by intermission and delivered two quick scores in the opening two minutes of the second half, providing the final margin.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Violet Fiers registered 12 saves, seven coming in the second half.
Gracie Lambrecht led Cornell's attack with four shots, two on goal.
Kiana Garcia Rios,
Eva Plathe and Huerth attempted two shots apiece.
The Fighting Scots outshot Cornell, 22-12, and held a slight 7-6 edge in corner kicks.
Coming up – Cornell (2-7 overall, 0-3 MWC) plays host to Beloit (2-5-1 overall, 1-0-1 MWC) at 1:30 p.m. Saturday on Senior Day.
