Lauren Martin, a native of Ontario, Canada, was hired in August 2013 as head coach of Cornell College’s first women’s varsity lacrosse team in 2014-15.
Martin was a standout player at NCAA Division II Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, N.C. She spent the past two seasons as a graduate assistant at Lake Erie College in Painesville, Ohio.
Martin was impressed with her initial visit to Mount Vernon, in particular the new field turf on historic Ash Park Field where the Rams will play their home lacrosse games during the inaugural 2015 spring season.
Martin will use the 2013-14 academic year to assemble her first roster.
“(Becoming a head coach) is something I’ve always wanted to do,” said Martin, a 2011 graduate of Lees-McRae. “I am fortunate to be able to do this a lot sooner than I anticipated. Starting up a program will definitely be a challenge, but I will have a lot of support. I am really excited about this opportunity.”
Martin earned an athletic scholarship to play lacrosse at Lees-McRae, where she was a three-year starting midfielder and two-time team captain for the Bobcats. Martin was named team Most Valuable Player her junior season. She earned a spot on the Conference Carolinas All-Academic Team in 2010 and 2011.
Martin served as a student assistant at Lees-McRae in her senior season after an ACL injury ended her playing career. She graduated with Presidential Honors from Lees-McRae, earning a bachelor’s degree in physical education along with a teachers’ license.
Martin joined the women’s lacrosse staff at Division II Lake Erie as a graduate assistant in August 2011. The program was in its third season when Martin started there.
Martin earned a master’s in business administration from Lake Erie in May 2013.
