Cornell falls twice at Luther Duals

DECORAH – Cornell's Ben Hewson (SR/Loveland, Colo.) recorded a pair of wins at 165 pounds, although the Rams fell twice at the Luther Duals Saturday in the Regents Center.

The Rams dropped the opening meet to UW-Stevens Point, 32-16. Host Luther topped the Rams in the next dual, 25-13.

Cornell (3-5) won four of the 10 matches against UW-Stevens Point (1-2), including three straight that brought the Rams within 20-16 with two bouts remaining.

The fourth-ranked Hewson (10-2) started the rally with a 6-4 decision over Jordan Weinzelt. Cornell's Wylie Allen (JR/Gilberts, Ill.) (5-2) followed with a 6-3 win over James Borgen at 174. Bryce Oveson (SO/Wilton, Iowa) (7-4) scored a quick pin in 55 seconds over Zack Moon at 184, cutting Cornell's deficit to four points.

UW-Stevens Point notched pins at 197 and 285 to take the dual. The Pointers tallied bonus points in five matches, including four pins.

Austin Thomas (SO/Waterford, Wis.) (6-5) scored Cornell's other match win, a 12-4 major decision at 149.

Luther (2-0) pulled away from the Rams late in the second dual of the day. Hewson's 14-5 major decision over Tanner Weaver sliced Cornell's deficit to 14-10 with four matches to go.

Ram heavyweight Chris Lyons (SR/Overland Park, Kan.) rolled 8-2 over Logan Kennedy. At 133, Cornell's Devin Stortz (SO/Decorah, Iowa) recorded a pin in 2:15 over Tyler DiFlore.

Cornell's Wulf (10-7 at 141) and Thomas (4-1 at 157) lost tight decisions at their respective weights.

Coming up – The Rams take on defending NCAA champion and second-ranked Wartburg (2-0) at 7 p.m. Friday in Waverly.
