Petry finishes 1-2 at NCAA Wrestling Championships

| By:
CEDAR RAPIDS – Brian Petry's terrific junior season came to a sudden end Friday night at the NCAA Division III Men's Wrestling Championships at Alliant Energy Powerhouse.

Cornell's unseeded and 12th-ranked Petry dropped a 4-1 decision in sudden victory to Roanoke's 14th-ranked Cade Parent in an elimination match at 165 pounds. Petry took a 1-0 lead into the third period and then gave up an escape that tied it at 1-1.

Parent scored the decisive takedown in the two-minute overtime to end the match.

Petry went 1-2 in his second consecutive appearance at nationals. He won his 30th match earlier in the day and finished the campaign at 30-10. Eight of his defeats were against Top 15 opponents.

Petry opened the tournament with a 7-6 decision over Ohio Northern's Ben Hegler. The Cornell wrestler posted the first takedown, hit a reversal in the second period and hung on late with the match tied at 6-6. Petry won with riding time.

Petry lost an 11-3 major decision to No. 5 seed and returning all-American Andrew Supers of Baldwin Wallace on the championship side.

A three-time regional placewinner, Petry carries 89 career victories into his final 2026-27 season. Coach Brent Hamm's Rams bring back six regional starters.
