Young Rams victorious in opener, 67-50

MOUNT PLEASANT – Cornell had seven players score their first collegiate points as the Rams notched a 67-50 season-opening women's basketball win over Iowa Wesleyan Sunday afternoon in Ruble Arena.

Back in action for the first time in more than 11 months, Cornell (1-0) was sharp from the start and built a commanding 40-25 halftime lead on 53.3-percent shooting from the field. The margin increased to 54-31 through three quarters.

The Rams connected for eight 3-point goals, four coming from sophomore guard Madison Osborn (SO/Alburnett, Iowa) who netted a team-high 14 points in only 22 minutes. Forward Rachael Adewusi (FR/Warren, Mich.) came off the bench to collect 13 points and a team-best six rebounds in her Ram debut.

Madison Wauters (SO/Winterset, Iowa) provided 12 points and five rebounds. Freshmen Ilah Perez-Johnson (FR/Bettendorf, Iowa) and Taylor Busch (FR/Williamsburg, Iowa) tallied nine and seven points, respectively. Busch added four assists and three steals. Newcomer Kali March (FR/Littleton, Colo.) also had three steals.

Cornell prevented any comeback chances by the home team with a 9-0 spurt to start the second half. Osborn had five points during the run, which included a bucket each from Adewusi and Wauters.

The Rams pressured Iowa Wesleyan (0-3) into 20 turnovers and held a 27-8 advantage in bench points. The Tigers struggled to shoot just 30.9 percent from the floor, including 2-of-15 from long range.

Anija Simmons paced the Tigers with 22 points.

Coming up – The Rams and Tigers meet again Thursday for a 7 p.m. matchup inside Cornell's Small Multi-Sport Center.
