Bermudez-Smith wins twice in tight dual defeat

MOUNT VERNON – Cornell's women's tennis team was edged on its home courts Saturday, dropping a 5-4 meet against Greenville inside the Small Sport Center Arena.

Sophomore Regina Bermudez-Smith (SO/Richmond, Va.) was a two-time winner for the Rams (3-4), which included an 8-4 victory with No. 2 doubles partner Amanda Dragon (JR/Mount Vernon, Iowa). Bermudez-Smith won handily at No. 5 singles, 6-0 and 6-3.

Makayla Johnson (FR/Westmont, Ill.) was a 6-4, 6-4 victor at the No. 3 singles position. Ashley Mink (FR/Akron, Ohio) took a hard-fought 1-6, 6-4, 9-7 decision at No. 6.

Greenville (3-1) clinched the dual win in a battle at No. 2 singles. Cornell's Emmaline Fievet (JR/Bend, Ore.) staved off three match points in the third-set tiebreaker before falling 5-7, 6-4, 11-9.

Coming up – The Rams are back home next Saturday, March 20 for a 3 p.m. meet with Milwaukee School of Engineering.
