Cougars hand Rams first loss of season, 8-4

MOUNT VERNON – A three goal run by the Cougars of Concordia Chiacgo tamed the Rams Monday night in women's lacrosse action. The Rams earned their first loss of the season by a score of 8-4.

Elizabeth Ott (SR/St. Paul, Minn.) scored the lone two goals in the first half for Cornell (2-1 overall). The second highlighted by Ott's coast-to-coast finish at the Cougars' net to tie the match 2-2.

Concordia (2-0 overall) tacked on the games next two goals, with the second one coming just 12 seconds into the second half.

Nina Deer (JR/Highland Park, Ill.) tried to kickstart the Rams rally notching a man-up score with just under 27 minutes left. Before they could get started the Cougars sprinted ahead with three straight goals, widening their lead to four.

Sydney Swift (JR/Aurora, Colo.) capped off the Rams scoring at the 17:08 mark.

Ellie Nestingen (JR/St. Paul, Minn.), Anna Methe and Seanne Bialo (JR/Anchorage, Alaska) stood tall on defense for Cornell. Collectively the trio accounted for over half of the Rams 36 ground balls, and seven caused turnovers. Renee Wuest (SR/Minneapolis, Minn.) and and Nina Deer also caused two turnovers a piece.

Maddie Althoff (JR/Stillwater, Minn.) was busy in Rams net, facing 28 Cougar shots on the night. Althoff gave up eight goals and recorded 12 saves over 48 minutes of action. Sierra Harris (SR/Green Bay Wis.) pitched in 12 minutes of scoreless relief.

Coming up – The Rams take spring break off and return to action at 1 p.m., on Saturday, March 27. They will play host to Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference foe Beloit College, at Van Metre Field at Ash Park.
