Box Score RIPON, Wis. – Cornell's string of wins at No. 2-4 singles was not quite enough in Saturday's 5-4 men's tennis loss to host Ripon.
Chris Penas-Hull (FR/Lincoln, Neb.) and Drew Arnold (JR/Georgetown, Texas) were two-time winners to lead the Rams, who slipped to 5-6 on the season. Ripon moved to 2-1.
Playing as doubles partners for only the second time this season, Penas-Hull and Arnold claimed a decisive 8-1 victory at the No. 2 slot in the lineup. In a big swing match at No. 1 doubles, Cornell's Federico Polidori (FR/Miami Beach, Fla.) and Alexander Hadler-Strumlauf (FR/La Jolla, Calif.) were edged 8-7 (5) in a battle that saw Ripon come back from a 7-5 deficit.
Cornell's No. 3 tandem of Michael Coester (SO/Cedar Rapids, Iowa) and Bryce Fincher (SO/Lafayette, Colo.) fell 8-4.
Hadler-Strumlauf bumped his singles record to 9-2 with a 6-2, 6-2 win at the No. 2 position. Penas-Hull won 6-4, 7-5 at No. 3 singles, while Arnold cruised 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4.
With the dual tied 4-4, Ripon's Vince Ireland clinched the team win with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Coester at No. 5 singles.
Coming up – Cornell opens Midwest Conference South Division play next Saturday, April 17 with a 1 p.m. home dual against Illinois College.
