Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Loras holds off Rams' late rally, 13-12

DUBUQUE – Sydney Swift (JR/Aurora, Colo.) and the Cornell women's lacrosse squad gave it all they had but fell short in a 13-12 Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference action battle on the road.

Swift started the final rally with 5:13 remaining in the match off a helper from Nina Deer (JR/Highland Park, Ill.), cutting the deficit to 13-10. It was her third goal of the half and sixth of the game to lead all players in scoring.

Elizabeth Ott (SR/St. Paul, Minn.) and Anna Methe (FR/Omaha, Neb.) kept it rolling, following up with quick goals of their own, and put the Rams (3-3 overall, 0-2 MWLC) behind by just one. But the Duhawks (6-3 overall, 3-1 MWLC) were able to hold off Cornell and secure the win in the final minutes.

To start the game, Loras jumped out to a 3-1 lead, before Cornell rattled off a 3-0 scoring run, gaining its only lead of the night. Loras wasted no time with a 4-0 run of its own and left Cornell playing catch up the rest of the way.

Ott and Deer each had two goals for Cornell while Mollie Shannon (SR/Galesburg, Ill.) recorded her first career goal for the Rams.

Ellie Nestingen (JR/St. Paul, Minn.), Seanne Bialo (JR/Anchorage, Alaska), and Methe stood tall on the defensive end, combining for 14 ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Both teams were nearly identical statistically, but the Duhawks outshot Cornell 34-26, and had nine assists compared to the Rams' three.

Maddie Althoff (JR/Stillwater, Minn.) fended 12 Loras shots in the 60 minutes of action.

Coming up – The Rams head to St. Paul, Minn., on Friday night to face off against Hamline University. The MWLC match starts at 5 p.m.
