MOUNT VERNON – The Cornell men's lacrosse team dropped a Midwest Lacrosse Conference match to the sticks of Monmouth College Wednesday night at Van Metre Field at Ash Park. The fast-paced Scots downed the Rams 17-3.
Monmouth (4-1 overall, 3-1 MLC) came out firing with 22 shots in the first quarter, and jumped out to a 4-0 lead on the Rams. Cornell (1-5 overall, 1-4 MLC) broke into the scoring column at the minute mark in the second quarter after Kyle Jussila (JR/Elk River, Minn.) broke free and scored on a helper from Warren Wiberg (SO/Valley Center, Calif.).
Cornell would go on to be held scoreless until the 12:32 mark in the fourth quarter after a man-up goal by Jesse Small (FR/Nashville, Tenn.). Wiberg rounded out the scoring for Cornell with just under two minutes left in the final frame.
On the night, the Scots offense led the way outshooting Cornell 67-31, and capitalizing on 3-of-6 extra-man opportunities. The Rams scooped up 35 ground balls to Monmouth's 47, and completed an impressive 22-of-26 clear attempts.
Wiberg and Demarius Pittman (JR/Denver, Colo.) led the Rams with 10 and six ground balls, respectively.
Evan Begner (FR/Evergreen, Colo.) managed to fend off 19 of the Scots shots over the 60 minutes of action.
Coming up – The Rams conclude their regular season on Sunday in St. Paul, Minn. Cornell takes on Northalnd College in MLC action with a 1 p.m. start.
