Aractingi scores No. 1 singles win in MWC opener

Box Score

GREEN BAY, Wis. – Cornell sophomore Liv Aractingi (SO/Kansas City, Mo.) recorded a quality win at No. 1 singles, although St. Norbert's women took Thursday's Midwest Conference opening tennis dual from the Rams, 7-2, at Western Racquet & Fitness Club.

Coach Peter Dumas was pleased with the team's effort, despite being short two key players from its regular lineup. The Rams (4-6 overall, 0-1 MWC) had to default matches at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles.

Aractingi stepped up with her best singles match of the season. After dropping the opening set 6-1, Aractingi came back for a 6-4 win in the second and outlasted Lauren Paulson in the third-set tiebreaker, 9-7.

Cornell's other team point came with an 8-5 decision from No. 2 doubles tandem Amanda Dragon (JR/Mount Vernon, Iowa) and Ashley Mink (FR/Akron, Ohio). Aractingi and Emmaline Fievet (JR/Bend, Ore.) were edged by the same 8-5 margin at No. 1 doubles.

Fievet fell 6-0, 7-5 in the No. 2 singles position, while Dragon lost 7-5, 6-0 at the No. 3 slot. No. 4 player Mink dropped a 6-1, 6-1 match. Freshman Isabella Cortes (FR/Plainfield, Ill.) came up short at No. 5 singles – 6-3, 7-5 – in her first collegiate varsity competition.

Coming up – The Rams continue league play Saturday against Lake Forest (2-1 overall, 0-0 MWC) with a 1:30 p.m. home meet inside the Small Sport Center Arena.
