GREEN BAY, Wis. – Cornell's women's tennis team saw its season end Thursday afternoon with a 9-0 loss to second-seeded St. Norbert in the North Division semifinals of the Midwest Conference Tournament at Western Racquet & Fitness Club.
The third-seeded Rams finished a long campaign – that began in early September – at 4-10 overall. Thursday marked the third loss this month against the Green Knights (3-2), who advance to Sunday's North final against top-seeded Lake Forest.
Coach Peter Dumas' young Rams were competitive despite falling short in all nine matches, including an 8-6 battle from No. 2 doubles tandem Amanda Dragon (JR/Mount Vernon, Iowa) and Regina Bermudez-Smith (SO/Richmond, Va.).
Dragon also fought tough in singles play, taking her No. 5 opponent to three sets in a 4-6, 6-1, 10-1 defeat.
Cornell's No. 3 doubles pair of Makayla Johnson (FR/Westmont, Ill.) and Ashley Mink (FR/Akron, Ohio) lost 8-4. No. 1 partners Liv Aractingi (SO/Kansas City, Mo.) and Emmaline Fievet (JR/Bend, Ore.) dropped an 8-3 match.
Mink was edged 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 6 singles position. No. 1 player Aractingi (6-1, 6-3), No. 2 Fievet (6-0, 6-4), No. 3 Johnson (6-3, 6-3) and No. 4 Bermudez-Smith (6-4, 6-1) all lost both sets in their respective singles matches.
Johnson finished her freshman season as the team leader with five singles wins. Dragon, a junior, posted a team-high six victories in doubles competition.
