Box Score SAINT PETER, Minn. - The Cornell men's tennis team competed at the ITA Division III Midwest Regional Championships over the weekend at Gustavus Adolphus College, marking the Rams' first appearance at the regional since 2019.
Chris Penas-Hull and
Zachary Ong put together strong showings in the Midwest Open Singles and Doubles fields. Penas-Hull opened his weekend defeating Lucas Healy of Loras, 8-3, in the round of 128, and followed that up with another victory over Nile Petersen of Wartburg, 8-6, and advanced to the round of 32. Matched up against Maxwell Davis of Macalester, Penas-Hull fell 8-3 to conclude singles play for the weekend.
Ong also advanced to the round of 32 in the Midwest Open singles field. In his first round, Ong defeated Ben Anderson of Saint John's, 8-1, and then was victorious over Taylor Duncan of Saint John's, 8-6. In the round of 32, Ong fell to Juan Pablo Rosaldo of Luther, 8-1, to wrap up singles play.
Penas-Hull & Ong teamed up for the Midwest Open doubles draw and kept the momentum going on Saturday. An 8-6 win in the first round over Nico Greis and Alex Daigneault of St. Scholastica advanced the tandem to the round of 32, where they kept things going capturing another win, 8-3, over Joe Dwyer & Taylor Duncan of Saint John's.
Alexander Hadler-Strumlauf and
Federico Polidori also competed for the Rams over the weekend in the ITA Singles and Doubles draws. Facing stiff competition, Hadler-Strumlauf battled close against Evan Huemoeller of Saint Mary's and came up short, 6-4, 6-4. Polidori had his hands full against No. 10 seed Alex Budde from host Gustavus Adolphus College and fell 6-0, 6-1 in the first round. Hadler-Strumlauf and Polidori competed together in the ITA doubles field and took on Wilder Cooke & Karch Knoll of Grinnell in the first round, falling 8-2.
