MOUNT VERNON – Cornell coach
Trent Schneider's men's tennis team is set for a busy three-day championship weekend on the courts at Hitters SportsPlex in Middleton, Wis.
The Rams (9-12 overall, 3-3 MWC) qualified for the
MWC Team Tournament as the No. 4 seed. They'll face No. 1 seed and 17-time defending champion Grinnell (12-11, 6-0 MWC) in a semifinal at 9 a.m. Friday.
No. 2 Lake Forest (11-8, 5-1) plays No. 3 Ripon (7-7, 4-2) in Friday's second semifinal at noon. The championship dual will be contested at approximately 4 p.m. Friday. The champion earns the MWC's automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Cornell is back in the MWC Team Tournament for the fourth time in the past five years it has been held. The Rams lost 9-0 to Grinnell in last year's MWC South Division championship match.
The Rams fell 9-0 to both Grinnell and Lake Forest this spring. They dropped a 6-3 meet to Ripon.
The
MWC Singles Championships get underway at 8 a.m. Saturday. The
Doubles Tournament starts at 8:15 a.m. Sunday.
Sophomore
Alexander Hadler-Strumlauf heads Cornell's lineup as the third seed in the No. 1 singles flight. He has posted a 14-6 overall singles record, including a 4-2 mark in MWC matches.
Junior
Justin Mendez (4-2 MWC) is also seeded third at No. 3 singles. No. 2
Chris Penas-Hull (2-4 MWC), No. 4
Bryce Fincher (1-4), No. 5
Edwin Holyoake (2-4) and No. 6
Orion Mason (3-3) round out Cornell's singles roster.
In doubles, Hadler-Strumlauf and Mendez earned the third seed in the No. 1 flight. They are 9-8 as partners this season, including 4-2 in MWC play.
Holyoake and Penas-Hull are 4-3 (3-3 MWC) at No. 2 doubles. Mason and
Ravi Parekh (1-0 MWC) will compete at No. 3.
