DAVENPORT, Fla. – Junior
Patrick Montagna tossed seven impressive innings in his first Cornell pitching start as the Rams cruised to their fourth straight victory, 8-1, over Greenville Monday afternoon.
The Rams boosted their record to 6-2 overall, including a 4-0 mark at the halfway point of their Florida trip.
Montagna (2-0) faced only five batters over the minimum, yielding five hits and striking out six. The right-hander's only blip was an RBI double in the first inning that put Greenville (4-6) ahead 1-0. Montagna followed that with six consecutive shutout innings before his work was done.
Drew Logel provided all the support Montagna would need with a towering two-run homer to left field in the top of the second. Logel was 2-for-4 at the plate with three runs and two RBIs.
Josiah Shaw delivered a two-run double in the fourth, and later scored in the inning on a wild pitch that pushed the lead to 5-1.
Cornell struck three more times in the sixth, capped by a sacrifice fly from
James Kent.
Relievers
Chad Dzierba and
Kale Rose each pitched one scoreless inning to close out the game.
Josiah Shaw and
Darren Mancke tallied two stolen bases apiece for the Rams, who now have 21 steals through four games in Florida. Meanwhile, Cornell's pitching staff has given up just four earned runs through 32 innings on the trip.
Coming up – Cornell resumes spring break action Wednesday with a single game against Ohio Northern at 12:30 p.m. (central time) in Auburndale, Fla.
