Rams thump Monmouth, 19-3, for program's first postseason berth

MONMOUTH, Ill. – There was no denying Cece Zanoni and Cornell's women's lacrosse team of a chance at history in Saturday's regular-season finale.

Zanoni's 10 goals smashed Cornell's single-game record and the Rams captured the program's first-ever Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference Tournament berth with a 19-3 blowout win over Monmouth at April Zorn Memorial Stadium.

Coach Meredith Meier's record-setting Rams (10-7 overall, 4-3 MWLC) are postseason-bound for the first time in the program's ninth varsity season with a fourth-place finish in the eight-team league.

Cornell earned the No. 4 seed in next week's MWLC Tournament, where it faces regular-season champion Saint Benedict in a semifinal Wednesday in St. Joseph, Minn.

Zanoni caught fire early with three unanswered goals to start the game and never cooled off, netting her 10th and final score with 1:20 left in regulation. The sophomore attacker shattered the previous program record of seven goals, which was accomplished nine times including twice by herself.

Zanoni struck six times in the opening half as the Rams charged ahead 11-1 at intermission. The lead ballooned to 14-1 after a 3-0 scoring run by Zanoni with 9:36 left in the third period.

Now with 48 goals this spring, Zanoni climbed to No. 2 on Cornell's single-season points list with 53.

The Rams' highest scoring output of the season saw Hailey Sieler, Anna Methe and Cheyenne Greenenwald contribute two goals apiece. Cornell received one goal each from India Smith, Meg Lewis and Sabrina Ibanez. Greenenwald dished three assists.

Goalie Hannah Miech picked up her ninth win of the season, recording six saves over 45 minutes. Kathryn Andries worked a scoreless fourth quarter.

Lewis led the team with eight draw controls. Ibanez had a team-best seven ground balls.

The Rams held a 37-13 advantage in total shots.
