MOUNT VERNON – The Cornell women's basketball team gave great effort before a large Senior Day crowd Saturday afternoon, although finished one bucket short in a tough 62-60 Midwest Conference setback to Lawrence inside the Small Athletic and Wellness Center.
Lawrence (14-10, 8-7 MWC) rallied from a nine-point deficit in the second half, snapping a five-game series losing streak and avenging a 52-43 loss last month against the Rams (8-15, 6-8 MWC).
The Vikings took a 61-59 lead on Maggie Culver's layup with 18 seconds remaining. After each team exchanged 1-of-2 trips from the free throw line,
A'ryn Jackson's 3-point shot from the corner rimmed out as the final horn sounded.
Cornell's senior players
Kali March,
Rachael Adewusi and
Ani'ja Simmons, and student manager Maricruz Hernandez were recognized prior to the game. The successful class has combined for 152 career starts.
March, appearing in her 72nd game, paced Cornell with 18 points on 6-for-12 shooting. She connected on four triples and increased her career 3-point tally to 138.
Adewusi collected double figures in scoring for the second consecutive game, chipping in 12 points and six rebounds. Simmons, making her 53rd career start, grabbed six boards in the contest, boosting her career rebounding total to 386 with two regular-season games to go.
The physical contest featured 47 personal fouls, 27 of which were assessed to Cornell.
