Box Score 2 MOUNT VERNON - Cornell's men's tennis team made its 2024 debut Saturday, splitting two duals in the arena of the Small Athletic and Wellness Center.
The Rams (1-2) claimed a 7-2 opening win over Wisconsin Lutheran, followed by a narrow 4-5 setback to NAIA's Northwestern College. Freshman Mills Arnold, led the way for the Rams going 4-0 to start the spring slate.
Against Wisconsin-Lutheran, the No. 1 doubles team of seniors Federico Polidori and Alexander Hadler-Strumlauf, and the No. 3 doubles team of sophomores Zachary Ong and August Krahn both won 8-7(5). The freshmen tandem of Trent Devore and Mills Arnold completed the doubles sweep giving the rams an 8-5 victory at No. 2.
The Rams claimed straight set wins at the No. 1, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 spots from Hadler-Strumlauf, Devore, Ong and Arnold respectively. Polidori fell in a tightly contested match at No. 2.
Against Northwestern College, Devore and Arnold at No. 2 secured an 8-7(3) tiebreak win to put the Rams on the board. At No 1., Hadler-Strumlauf/Polidori were edged 8-7(8) to give the Raiders a lead heading into singles.
Four of the six singles matches went to distance against the Raiders. Arnold and Edwin Holyoake, provided two comeback super tiebreak wins at No. 5 and No. 6. Devore dropped a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 decision at No. 3. Northwestern clinched the meet with straight set wins at No. 2 and No. 4.
Hadler-Strumlauf moved into #10 on the all time career wins list in program history after mounting a 0-6, 6-0, 6-4 comeback win at No. 1
Coming up - The Rams travel to Madison, Wisconsin next weekend for a triangular against host Edgewood College and Loras College on Feb 10th.
