FOND DU LAC, Wis. – Cornell's baseball team is most dangerous when cornered. The Rams proved it again Friday with a wild 19-14 comeback win over Marian at Herr-Baker Field.
The Rams rallied for eight runs with two outs in the top of the ninth inning to snatch the nonconference slugfest, which witnessed 34 total hits between the teams.
It marked the third game this week that Cornell (12-11) came back from a ninth-inning deficit to win.
Sophomore
Jack Rogers had a career day at the plate, capped by a two-run ground-rule double that pushed Cornell ahead 15-14 in the ninth. The Rams had trailed 14-5 through five innings.
Rogers finished 5-for-5 with two extra-base hits and a whopping seven RBIs to lead the Rams, who piled up 20 total hits and scored 12 runs over the final three innings. Rogers, who entered with only 16 at-bats this season, tripled home two runs in the eighth.
The comeback was made possible by an impressive relief outing from junior right-hander
Vince Tinajero, who tossed four scoreless innings to finish the game. Tinajero earned the win in his first pitching appearance of the season.
Seth Beals,
Kale Rose and
Vince Zipperer all recorded three hits apiece. Rose and Zipperer both scored four times. The Rams received two RBIs apiece from Beals,
Ridge Bowolick, Zipperer and
Ryan Weaver.
Nine different Rams registered a hit in the contest, which saw 22 runners left on base between the teams.
Marian dropped to 11-10 overall.
Coming up – The Rams travel to Ripon, Wis., for a three-game MWC set against the Red Hawks this weekend. Saturday's doubleheader starts at noon.
