Rams win 3 weight classes at annual CK-MD Invitational

| By:
MOUNT VERNON – Cornell's men fielded six finalists and crowned champions in three weight classes at its own Cliff Keen-Mike Duroe Invitational Saturday in the arena of the Small Athletic and Wellness Center.

First-year Jayson Stevens and junior Jase Van Pelt were declared co-champions at 125 pounds, both winning three matches on their path to the finals, which was uncontested.

Junior Eli Sneed captured the 133-pound title with a 7-2 victory over UW-La Crosse's Wyatt Magolski. Sneed recorded two pins and a technical fall during his perfect 5-0 day.

Cornell's 13th-ranked Treyten Steffen defeated top-seeded Ethan Winkelman of Augsburg, 5-4, in the championship match at 197. Steffen cruised to the finals with three consecutive pins and raised his career wins total to 97.

Cornell's three individual champions tied the program record for the most ever at its home tournament, which started in 1979. The Rams' last champion had been Ben Hewson (165) in 2019.

Senior 149-pounder Landon Card set a single-season school record with his 10th technical fall in a 19-2 quarterfinal win over St. Ambrose's Joshua Zeman. Card broke the previous mark of nine, shared by Chris Heilman (2007-08) and Pat McAuley (2006-07).

Card took runner-up in his bracket with a 3-1 record. He lost 7-0 in the finals to top-seeded Kyler Romero of Wartburg.

Sophomore AJ Parrish placed second at 157 with a 3-1 mark. He advanced to the championship with a 13-12 semifinal decision over Wartburg's Zach Licht before bowing out to Augsburg's Charlie Stuhl, 16-0.

Brian Petry placed third in the 165-pound division. He finished a strong 5-1 day with a 16-4 major decision over Augsburg's Trenton Dow.

Jayden Rael went 4-2 for fourth at 133. Dahson DeJong split six matches to take sixth at 174. Omar Samayoa (141) and Quinn Wilcoxen (285) both were consolation runners-up at their respective weights.

In the Silver Division, freshman Bryson Capansky was runner-up at 157. Nate Wood finished sixth at 149.

The 19-team field featured six nationally-ranked teams.

Coming up – Cornell competes at the Pete Willson Invitational Jan. 31-Feb. 1 in Wheaton, Ill.
