MOUNT VERNON – If the Midwest Conference Championships were any indication, Cornell's cross country teams are in store for another memorable meet at Saturday's
Midwest Region Championships in Waverly.
Coach
Jerry Frawley's will Rams have several individuals contending for all-region awards and NCAA berths when the gun goes off at Max Championship Cross Country Course. The men's 8K race starts at 11 a.m., followed by the women's 6K at noon.
The top 35 finishers in each gender gain all-region status. Fans can follow
live results here.
NCAA berths are awarded to the team champion from each of the 10 regions, in addition to 22 at-large teams. The top seven individuals in each region not on an NCAA-qualifying team also advance to the NCAA Division III Championships Nov. 22 in Spartanburg, S.C.
Two
Bremner Cup points are also at stake in head-to-head dual scoring with rival Coe.
Cornell's men's front runner
Isaac vanWestrienen is a two-time all-region performer, seeking to secure his third consecutive trip to the NCAA Championships. He was fourth at regionals a year ago.
On Nov. 1, VanWestrienen broke the MWC Championships record (23:57) in claiming MWC gold for the second year in a row. He was joined on the all-MWC podium by junior
Jake Bach (third) and sophomore
Isaac Morris (19th).
The men placed eighth in the regional team standings each of the past two years. The Rams scored 238 points in 2024.
Cornell's women are ranked No. 8 in the region and fresh off a strong runner-up effort at the MWC Championships. The 51 team points are the fewest scored by a Cornell squad at a conference meet since 1987.
Sophomore
Lidia Dahlman was crowned MWC champion two weeks ago, establishing course and Championships records with a lifetime-best mark of 21:00 at Seminole Valley Park. She is primed for a big jump from last year's 46th-place regional finish.
Dahlman was among five Rams to collect all-MWC accolades, joining seniors
Mackenzie Engbert (8th),
Alyza Koppes (12th),
Ava Claussen-Tubbs (13th) and sophomore
Carley Seeley (17th). Koppes claimed all-region honors last year, placing 31st.
Cornell's last NCAA women's qualifier was MariKate Murphy in 2017. The Rams were 13th in last year's regional standings with 364 points.
Saturday's field features 39 teams in each gender, nine of them nationally-ranked.
