MOUNT VERNON – The young Rams are learning how to finish games, as evidenced by their 2-0 women's basketball weekend at the Cornell Classic.
Cornell limited Dubuque to four points in the third quarter of Sunday's 61-52 victory at the Small Athletic and Wellness Center, improving the team's season record to 3-1.
On Saturday, the Rams used a 17-4 fourth-quarter run to defeat Nebraska Wesleyan, 62-48.
Cornell trailed Dubuque 32-29 at intermission. The Rams outscored the Spartans (2-2) by a 13-4 margin in the third period and played with the lead for the final 11:36 of regulation.
Leading 51-47 with less than three minutes to go, the Rams closed it out with six unanswered points. Kallyn Stroup had one bucket and a free throw and
Kiley Edris drained three free throws during the stretch.
Erin Knowles carried the Rams offensively with 26 points, one shy of her collegiate high. The sophomore hit 9-of-18 field goals, 6-of-7 free throws and gathered five rebounds.
Stroup was a spark off Cornell's bench with five rebounds and 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting.
Heidi Jorgensen provided nine points and four rebounds.
Caroline Kron distributed five assists.
Cornell committed only nine turnovers and made 14-of-17 free throws.
Coming up – Cornell is idle from competition until Nov. 25, when the Rams host North Central (Minn.) for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
