Brinker captures 197-pound crown at Coe Invitational

CEDAR RAPIDS – Cornell's men's wrestling team landed five finalists, highlighted by senior Jackson Brinker's title at 197 pounds Saturday at the nine-team Coe Invitational.
 
Brinker (7-2) won his weight class in convincing fashion with a 14-5 major decision over Grand View's Elijah Davis in the championship match.
 
Brinker posted a 59-second pin in the semifinals over Simpson's Troy Galloway. He earned a 5-1 quarterfinal win over Grand View's Gage Allen.
 
The Rams received runner-up finishes from senior Jase Van Pelt (125), 12th-ranked senior Eli Sneed (133), freshman Nolan Howell (157) and seventh-ranked junior Brian Petry (165).
 
Van Pelt (7-3) lost by fall in 1:34 to Coe's second-ranked Brayden Parke in the 125-pound final. Sneed (8-3) dropped a 5-0 decision to Coe's sixth-ranked Brody Neighbor in the title bout at 133.  
 
Howell (8-2) lost a 12-1 major decision to NIACC's Cory Scanlan for the 157-pound championship. Petry (7-4) was edged 6-1 in sudden victory to Coe's Bo Koedam in the 165-pound final.
 
The Rams fielded 17 total placewinners in the tournament, including third-place efforts from freshmen Owen West (125) and Truman Folkers (133).
 
Cornell had four wrestlers place in the 141-pound bracket with Jayden Rael (fourth), Dylan Heater (sixth), Elliot Cooney (eighth) and Owen Adlfinger (eighth).
 
Jayson Stevens took fourth at 133. Gannon Kuhn (sixth at 125), Elias Chapin (sixth at 174), Jax Miller (seventh at 149), 14th-ranked AJ Parrish (eighth at 157) and Brayden Pillars (eighth at 165) all placed in the top eight at their respective weights.  
 
Coming up – The Rams compete at the MSOE Invitational Dec. 6 in Milwaukee, Wis.
