Card records 100th win, among 3 Rams to reach region semifinals

| By:
CEDAR RAPIDS – Senior Landon Card captured his 100th career victory and was among three Cornell wrestlers to advance to the semifinals during Friday's opening day of the Region VI Championships at Alliant Energy Powerhouse.

The third-seeded Card won both of his matches to stay in the title hunt at 149 pounds. Sixth-seeded sophomore Brian Petry at 165 and third-seeded senior Cael McLaren at 184 both went 2-0 and also moved into the semifinals.

The Rams advanced nine individuals to Saturday's final day, which begins at 11 a.m. with the championship semifinals. All place matches are scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

The top three finishers in each of the 10 weight classes qualify for the NCAA Division III Championships March 14-15 in Providence, R.I.

Cornell stands sixth in the 18-team field with 65.5 points.

Card (28-7) meets Loras' No. 2 seed Chase Fiser in Saturday's semifinal. Card claimed win No. 100 with an 18-3 technical fall – his school-record 13th of the season – over Nebraska Wesleyan's Travis Guzman in the first round. He then needed extra time in the quarterfinals to outlast Dubuque's Brett Back for a 7-4 sudden victory.

Card boosted his career record to 101-51. Teammates McLaren and Treyten Steffen joined the 100-win club earlier this season. It's the first time in program history that three Rams reached the milestone in the same season.

Petry (29-7) received a first-round forfeit and then upset Luther's Bryce McDonough in the quarterfinals, 10-3. He'll take on top-seeded and returning all-American Dustin Bohren of Loras in the semifinals.

The eighth-ranked McLaren (26-4) had no trouble in his two wins at 184, scoring an 11-2 major decision over Eureka's Thomas Culp followed by a 7-2 quarterfinal decision over Loras' Landry Barker. McLaren faces Coe's second-seeded and sixth-ranked Jared Voss in the semifinals.

The Rams have six individuals alive on the consolation side with junior Jase Van Pelt (125), junior Eli Sneed (133), sophomore AJ Parrish (157), freshman Jace Nelson-Brown (174), fifth-year Steffen (197) and junior Jackson Brinker (285).

Junior Elliot Cooney finished 0-2 at 141 in his regional debut.
