DUBUQUE – Freshman
Jayson Stevens captured the 125-pound title, heading 10 Cornell placewinners Saturday at Dubuque's Brown Terrell Invitational.
Stevens stamped his 3-0 tournament with a convincing 7-0 decision over Carthage's Chris Kish in the championship match. Stevens rolled to a 15-1 major decision in the semifinals.
The Rams fielded two other finalists in junior
Jayden Rael at 133 and junior
Austin Wilkins at 184. Both finished runner-up.
Rael dropped a 7-2 decision to UW-La Crosse's Teague Holzer in the 133-pound title bout. Rael went 3-1 with two bonus-point wins.
Wilkins outscored his first two opponents by a 19-0 margin. He was edged, 4-3, in the 184-pound championship against UW-La Crosse's Tyler Dormanen.
Sophomore 197-pounder
Braydon Hoffman reeled off four consecutive consolation wins, including a 4-1 sudden victory over Carthage's Diego Fuentes to place third.
The Rams received fifth-place showings from Scott Scheidecker (157),
Jace Nelson-Brown (174) and
Zion Shaw (184). Placing sixth for Cornell were
Gannon Kuhn (125),
Dylan Heater (133) and
Landen Schemmel (197).
Coming up – The 21st-ranked Rams (13-5) host 11th-ranked Coe (9-4) in a Bremner Cup dual at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Small Athletic and Wellness Center.
