MOUNT VERNON – Cornell men's lacrosse faced a young, determined Lawrence University team on Saturday at Van Metre Field at Ash Park. Both teams played strong defense throughout the game, with the Rams prevailing 9-6.
Lawrence (2-4, 0-1 in NACC) got on the board first with a goal early in the first quarter. Sophomore
Tyler Foster then answered with his first of three goals on a nifty assist from
Kaden Weaver.
Ash Hoelscher and
Matt Norwood (assist from
Charley Kobets) tacked on goals to put Cornell up by two early in the second period. The Rams never trailed again.
Goalkeeper
Thomas Cook played a stellar game in the net to pick up the win for the Rams. Cook had 20 saves for the contest.
Defensively the Rams were led by
Torii Greiskalns with five caused turnovers. Greiskalns also picked up six ground balls and added a goal.
Ben Schwartz and Foster each had two caused turnovers.
Faceoff specialist Hoelscher continued his dominance winning 13-of-14 faceoffs. Hoelscher picked up 10 ground balls to go with an assist and goal for Cornell (4-3, 1-1 in NACC). Kobets scored a goal and had two assists, while picking up five ground balls.
Coming up – The Rams go on the road Wednesday to face conference foe Aurora. Game time is 5:00 p.m. in Aurora, Ill.
