MOUNT VERNON – Cornell women's lacrosse opened their inaugural season in NACC (Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference) with decisive 16-7 victory over Marian Sabres Wednesday in the friendly confines of Van Metre Field at Ash Park.
The Rams (3-4, 1-0 NACC) found themselves down a goal early in the first period. Senior
Cece Zanoni then took over the game scoring three of her game high nine goals to put Cornell up 3-1 early in the second quarter. From that point on it was all Rams.
Junior
Brynn Miroslavich added three goals,
Natalie Hudgins chipped in two goals,
Ava Ferencz and
Meg Lewis rounded out the scoring for the Rams with a goal each.
Sabrina Ibanez had two of the five assists that the Rams tallied, with
Hailey Sieler,
Meg Lewis and Zanoni each picking up one assist.
Junior
Ilsa Jeffery led the Rams relentless defense with seven caused turnovers and seven ground balls. Ferencz, Lewis, Hudgins and
Elissafe Moreno each caused two turnovers. Ferencz picked up five ground balls and Moreno had two ground balls.
Cornell won 17 of the 25 draw controls. Ibanez lead the Rams with six draw controls and Lewis picked up five.
Hannah Miech picked up the win in the net for the Rams. Miech had six saves on 14 shots on goals by the Sabres (3-6, 0-1 NACC) and only gave up two goals.
Leila Velez played goalie in the fourth quarter for Cornell.
Coming up – Rams travel to Mequon, Wis. Saturday to face Concordia (Wis.) in a conference matchup. Game time is 3:00 p.m.
