MOUNT VERNON – Cornell's women's lacrosse team was stout on the defensive end and claimed its first win of the season, 10-2 over Augustana, Thursday at Van Metre Field at Ash Park.
The Rams (1-2) held the visiting team scoreless for a 31-minute stretch that spanned deep into the third quarter to take control. Cornell finished off the dominant performance with a 4-0 run to end the contest.
Winning goalie
Hannah Miech keyed the defensive effort, yielding just two goals in 60 minutes of work. She recorded eight saves and six ground balls.
Senior
Cece Zanoni paced Cornell's attack with five goals on 11 attempts and also dished one assist. She scored four times in the second half as the Rams broke open a 4-1 halftime lead.
Hailey Sieler found the back of the net twice, while
Meg Lewis,
Sabrina Ibanez and
Cheyenne Greenenwald each scored once.
Natalie Hudgins contributed two assists.
The Rams scooped 36 ground balls, eight coming from
Brynn Miroslavich. She and
Ava Ferencz led the team with three caused turnovers apiece.
Cornell forced the Vikings (2-2) into 39 turnovers.
