INDIANOLA – Cornell's 14 stranded base runners proved costly in Thursday's 5-3 nonconference loss to Simpson at McBride Field.
The Rams (8-12) more than doubled up the home team in total hits, 11-5, although Simpson's pitching staff was able to escape several scoring threats.
Cornell tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the fourth inning on
Ryan Weaver's single that plated
Zach Garton. Simpson (9-13) answered with three runs in the fifth and held on from there.
Joseph Lomeli went 2-for-3 with a double and a run to lead Cornell's lineup.
Cade Parks and Garton also registered multi-hit games.
Esteban Perez and
Vince Zipperer had one RBI apiece.
Senior shortstop
Kale Rose scored his 124th career run, tying Walker Breard (2015-18) for No. 2 on Cornell's all-time list. Rose is only four runs shy of the school record held by Chet Knake (2000-03).
The Rams left 10 runners on base through the first five innings, including the bases loaded in the fourth.
Cornell reliever
Grant Morris fired 3.2 scoreless innings of one-hit ball to close out the game.
Coming up – The Rams travel to Ripon (6-9 overall, 2-1 MWC) for a three-game series this weekend in Ripon, Wis. Saturday's doubleheader starts at noon.
