RIPON, Wis. –
Sean Alvarez went 4-for-5 with a homer and five RBIs in Cornell's 15-7 Game 2 baseball win over Midwest Conference foe Ripon Saturday at Francis Field.
The Rams salvaged a split after giving up a late lead in an 11-7 opening loss.
Cornell (9-13 overall, 2-3 MWC) and Ripon (7-11 overall, 3-2 MWC) square off once more at noon Sunday in the rubber game of the series in Ripon, Wis.
Alvarez bust out of a slump in a big way, accounting for seven hits, five runs and seven RBIs in the doubleheader. The senior slugger also homered in the opener.
In Game 1, senior
Kale Rose made history with a solo home run in the top of the seventh that put the Rams ahead 6-5. Rose recorded his 100th career RBI, becoming the fourth Ram ever to reach that bench mark.
The Red Hawks rallied for six runs – all with two outs – in the bottom of the eighth to regain the lead. Cornell's
Ryan Weaver hit a solo homer in the ninth, although the Rams' comeback stalled with two runners on base when the game ended.
Alvarez and
Esteban Perez had three hits apiece to pace the Rams. Weaver added two hits and scored twice from the leadoff spot.
Cornell right-hander
Logan Gannon notched his first collegiate pitching win in Game 2. The freshman allowed five earned runs over 5.1 innings and struck out six.
Thomas Hunt worked the final 3.1 innings, fanning five with no earned runs.
Alvarez collected four of the team's 15 hits. His two-run single in the eighth gave the Rams a 14-6 cushion.
Rose went 2-for-5 and passed Beriah Quick (2012-15) for No. 3 on Cornell's all-time hits list with 185.
Vince Zipperer was 3-for-5 with three RBIs.
