Box Score 2 JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – Cornell's men's tennis team traveled to Illinois to take on two MWC foes in Monmouth College and Illinois College. The Rams (13-7, 2-1 MWC) picked up a couple of key wins in their quest to return to the Midwest conference tournament for the sixth consecutive season, defeating the Scots 7-0, and the Blue Boys 5-2.
In the morning slate, Cornell shut out Monmouth with strong play in both singles and doubles. Sophomores
Trent Devore &
Mills Arnold closed out a tiebreak win at No. 1, while No. 2 duo of
Zachary Ong &
Sam Cumicek pushed for a 7-5 win.
August Krahn &
Drew Campbell cruised to a 6-1 win at No. 3. The Rams swept all singles matches in straight sets.
Against Illinois College, the Rams escaped with the doubles point thanks to wins by Devore/Arnold (No. 1) and a comeback win from Ong/Cumicek (No. 2).
A tight battle across the board in singles, the Rams collected three third set wins to clinch the dual, by Arnold, Krahn and Cumicek at No. 4, No. 5, No. 6.
Devore cleaned up with a swift victory at No. 1, 6-2 6-0 to round out the day.
Arnold, Devore and Cumicek each enjoyed 4-0 days. Ong and Krahn finished 3-1 a piece.
Coming up: The Rams hit the road to Chicagoland to take on Elmhurst University on Friday April 11th.
