Collyott, Saunders lead Rams at Cornell Invitational

MOUNT VERNON, IA –  The Cornell men's tennis team hosted the Cornell Invitational against Loras College, Central College, and the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, this Sunday, at home, and at Mount Vernon High School. At this event, a total of 71 matches were played across 6 flights.

Freshmen Gavin Collyott and Jack Saunders paced the Rams both collecting 3-1 records individually for the day. Sophomores Eric Dirksmeyer and Benett Gregor followed, with a 2-2, and 2-1 record respectively.

At Cornell, the Rams started with a 6-2, 7-5 victory from junior Trent Devore. After a couple of setbacks, the Rams picked up a 6-3 doubles victory from sophomore Sam Cumicek and freshman Matthew Oshiro. The pair of Dirksmeyer and Gregor, pulled out a close 7-5 match over Loras. 

The Rams found a bit more success in round 2, with two close wins from junior Evan Davis and Dirksmeyer, with a 4-2, 0-4, 11-9, and a 4-2, 1-4, 12-10 scoreline, respectively. Gregor and Collyott finished their days with a swift 6-0 victory over Central. Saunders also won, with a 4-1, 3-4 win over Central, as well.

At Mount Vernon High School, Saunders pulled out a tight 6-1, 4-6, 10-2, win over UWSP, and Collyott and senior August Krahn took a 6-4 doubles win over Central. 

In the afternoon, Collyott took a quick victory over Loras, 4-1, 4-0, and sophomore Drew Campbell pulled out a 5-4 (5), 4-2 win, to finish the day.

Coming up – Next Sunday, Sept. 21, the Rams will play against Concordia Chicago, at home. First serve is set for 9:30AM.
