Men's Tennis records 24 match wins at Central Invitational

PELLA, IA- The Cornell College men's tennis team kicked off the start of their fall season at the Central Invite. The Rams came away with a 24-14 overall record today in flighted singles and doubles events. 

The Rams started with singles in the morning, taking 14 wins against Central College. At Pella High School, junior Trent Devore, and sophomore Andrew Campbell scored victories in flight 1 and flight 2, going 6-4, 7-5, and 1-6, 7-5, 10-4, respectively. Freshmen Henry Lambley and Jack Saunders scored two wins each, Lambley going 6-4, 6-3, and 6-0, 6-2, and Saunders going 6-2, 6-4, and 6-3, 6-0. 

At the Central College courts, the Rams won eight of ten singles matches, two of which were three set tiebreakers. Senior August Krahn and sophomore Benett Gregor pulled out their matches 6-1, 0-6, 12-10, and 6-7 (1), 7-6 (4), 10-7, respectively. 

The group of freshman Gavin Collyott, sophomore Eric Dirksmeyer, junior Evan Davis, Gregor, and Krahn, finished the rest, winning six other matches in straight sets.

In doubles, the Rams dropped only two of twelve matches, highlighted by pairs of senior Zachary Ong and Campbell, and freshman Matthew Oshiro and sophomore Sam Cumicek, going 2-0 in their matches. Collyott, Davis, and Gregor also went 2-0 in doubles, with mixed partners throughout the matches.

Collyott and Gregor both finished 4-0 in matches today, and Dirksmeyer finished 3-0 to end the day.

All Ram Newcomers in Oshiro, Saunders, Lambley and Collyott earned their first victories of their collegiate careers. 

Coming up- The Rams will host the Cornell Invitational on Sunday, September 14th, starting at 10:00AM, against Loras College, Central College, and UW-Stevens Point.
