Van Pelt, Petry crowned champions at Cliff Keen-Mike Duroe Invite

MOUNT VERNON – Cornell senior Jase Van Pelt (125 pounds) and junior 11th-ranked Brian Petry (165) claimed titles at the Cliff Keen-Mike Duroe Invitational Saturday inside the Small Athletic and Wellness Center Arena.
 
Van Pelt captured his second consecutive CK-MD championship in dramatic fashion. Tied 3-3 with UW-La Crosse's Cole Gentsch and only five seconds remaining, Van Pelt secured a decisive takedown for a 6-3 win. Van Pelt finished the day 5-0 with a major decision.
 
Petry defeated UW-La Crosse's Ryland Schneider, 6-2, to capture the 165-pound championship. Petry went 5-0, including a pin and a technical fall. In the semifinals, Petry survived a tight match with Augsburg's Colton Loween, winning 10-7 in sudden victory.
 
Austin Wilkins (184) and 14th-ranked Jackson Brinker (197) also both reached the finals in their respective weight classes and took runner-up. Wilkins went 3-1, falling 5-0 to Augsburg's Owen Greisbach in the championship bout. Brinker finished 3-1 with two majors and a technical fall. Brinker lost by fall in the finals to Augsburg's eighth-ranked Ethan Winkelman.
 
The Rams' Landen Schemmel (3-2) finished fourth at 184. No. 12 Eli Sneed (3-2) placed fifth at 133 and Elias Chapin (3-2) finished sixth at 174.
 
Cornell's 14th-ranked AJ Parrish (157) fell to Augsburg's Brady Swenson in the second round, then rolled off four straight victories to claim the consolation championship. Parrish finished 5-1.
