Cotton heads 4 Ram placewinners in final home competition

| By:
MOUNT VERNON – Coach Boston Jacobs' Cornell wrestling team claimed four placewinners at Saturday's Cliff Keen-Mike Duroe Invitational, doubling its total from last year's inaugural women's home tournament.

Senior Olivia Cotton closed her home career with a strong fifth-place effort in the 160-pound bracket. Cotton finished 5-1 on the day, her lone loss coming in the first round, 10-0, to eventual champion Sophia Bassino of Northern Michigan.

Cotton won five consecutive consolation matches, highlighted by three falls. She recorded lightning-quick pins in nine seconds and 17 seconds in back-to-back bouts. Cotton defeated Wartburg's Haillie Krueger, 9-1, for fifth.

The Rams picked up sixth-place finishes from senior Cheyenne Mulford at 117 and first-year Tori Maxey at 180. Mulford lost by fall in 2:43 in the semifinals to eventual champion Harlee Hiller of Iowa. Maxey won two consolation matches, 2-0 and 12-0.

First-year Sidney Zimmerman posted four pins during her busy 5-2 day, placing seventh at 160. She decked Central Methodist's Paris Kelleher in 2:32 in the seventh-place bout.

Graciela Juarez earned one match win in the 145-pound class. Averi Burke (138), Sydney Newberg (160) and Maddie Rose (160) also competed for the Rams.

Coming up – The Rams compete at the Loras Open Jan. 31 in Dubuque.
