BELOIT, Wis. – Cornell's women's basketball team handed head coach Brent Brase his 400th collegiate victory with Saturday's 63-49 Midwest Conference triumph over Beloit at Flood Arena.
The Rams (11-5 overall, 5-3 MWC) continued their surge in the league race, notching their fourth consecutive MWC win. They've won eight of their last nine contests overall.
Brase reached the 400-win milestone in his 32nd season at the college level. He's won 254 games in 21 seasons at Cornell, where he's led the Rams to four MWC championships. Brase compiled 146 victories as head men's coach at Coe College from 1994-2005.
Much like in the previous 399 wins, Coach Brase's defense paved the way to victory. The Rams held Beloit (5-13 overall, 2-7 MWC) to 27.3-percent shooting for the afternoon.
Erin Knowles led the Cornell attack with a game-high 25 points on 12-of-17 shooting. Knowles added eight rebounds and two blocks.
Heidi Jorgensen tallied nine points and went 3-of-6 from distance. Kallynn Stroup chipped in eight points and five rebounds. Maggie Thompson provided eight points, four rebounds, and three assists off the bench.
Cornell and Beloit went back and forth early, and were tied at 22 late in the second quarter. A 6-0 run to close the half put the Rams in front for good.
Cornell scored 25 points from 23 Buccaneer turnovers. The Rams totaled 34 points in the paint. Beloit edged Cornell in rebounding, 35-28.
Coming up – Cornell travels to play Monmouth (6-12 overall, 2-7 MWC) at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Monmouth, Ill. The Rams won the season's first meeting, 65-29, on Jan. 3.
