MONMOUTH, Ill. – Cornell's women's basketball team raced out of the gates and never looked back in Tuesday's 75-50 Midwest Conference victory over Monmouth at Glennie Gym.
The red-hot Rams (12-5 overall, 6-3 MWC) scored 14 unanswered points to start the game on path to their fifth straight league win and a season sweep over the Fighting Scots (6-13, 2-8).
Cornell is only one game behind second-place Lawrence (7-2 MWC) with nine to go.
Cornell was firing from long range early, getting 3-pointers from
Caroline Kron,
Erin Knowles and
Heidi Jorgensen in the opening 2:30 of the contest. Jorgensen followed with a conventional 3-point play and
Kallynn Stroup's bucket capped the 14-0 flurry.
Knowles, the reigning MWC Performer of the Week, cashed in 19 points and seven rebounds, both game-highs.
Jorgensen tossed in 17 points – one shy of her career high – on 6-of-10 shooting from the field. The junior guard eclipsed the 500-point mark as a Ram.
Stroup and
Maggie Thompson added 10 and eight points, respectively. The Rams hurried Monmouth into 22 turnovers and held a decisive 36-26 rebounding advantage.
The Rams, who led 36-17 at halftime, shot 15-of-21 from the foul line while Monmouth made only four free throws.
Tuesday marked coach
Brent Brase's 200th victory since the Rams rejoined the MWC in 2012-13. He earned his 400th collegiate coaching win on Saturday.
Coming up – Cornell travels to play Lake Forest (2-17 overall, 0-10 MWC) at 3 p.m. Saturday in Lake Forest, Ill. The Rams won the season's first matchup, 63-33.
