DAVENPORT, Fla. – Cornell sophomore
Logan Gannon returned to his home state and delivered a pitching performance for the ages in Cornell's 4-1 Game 2 victory over Elms Thursday night at Northeast Regional Park.
Gannon shattered the single-game school record with 18 strikeouts in the seven-inning contest. The 6-foot-3 right-hander allowed just one hit – a one-out infield single in the top of the second inning – during his 109-pitch masterpiece.
The Spring Hill, Fla., native broke Cornell's strikeout record held by Cameron Anfang, who fanned 16 batters against Fitchburg State in a 2019 neutral-site game also played in Florida.
Gannon (1-1) mowed down 13 Elms batters swinging. He issued three walks and did not allow an earned run. Gannon struck out the side in the first, second, fifth and seventh innings. He finished the historic night by punching out the final five batters he faced.
Gannon came within one strikeout of the Midwest Conference record, set by Monmouth's Wendall York way back in 1933.
This was the first complete game of Gannon's young career with the Rams.
The Rams (5-5) helped Gannon's cause with a three-run third inning. Elias singled and later scored on a wild pitch to even the score at 1-1.
Jimmy Moltini put the Rams ahead with an RBI single, followed by a run-scoring groundout from
Jamison Martine.
Moltini bunted home another run in the fifth.
Garrett Roehl doubled and scored twice.
Elms (4-4) won Thursday's opening game, 9-1.
Roehl went 2-for-3 with a double and RBI.
Caleb Smith scored Cornell's lone run in the fifth.
Coming up – The Rams wrap up their Florida trip with a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader Friday against Blackburn in Winter Haven.
