Rams split with Blackburn, finish 5-4 on spring break trip

WINTER HAVEN, FL – Cornell baseball team shutout Blackburn in game one Friday, 12-0. Then tumbled in game two, 19-2.

Game 1 – The Rams got a strong performance on the mound from junior Lucas Brutsche. Brutsche went the distance for Cornell shutting out the Beavers, allowing only four hits and striking out two. It was Brutsche first complete game of his career.

Jackson Hill got the Rams started with a double to lead off the first. He would score what would be the winning run on a wild pitch. Caleb Smith added a two-run single in the first. Cornell put runs on the board in each inning.

The Rams accumulated 14 hits in the game, picking up two hits from six different players: Hill, Luke Hull, Thomas Hunt, Garrett Roehl, Smith and Jasper Hancox. Smith and Hill each doubled for Cornell.

Smith led the Rams with three RBIs. Hull and Hunt each drove in two.  Hill, Hull, Roehl and Smith each scored twice for Cornell.

Game 2 – Cornell (6-6) couldn't make up for Blackburn's (9-5) 10 run first inning in the nightcap.  Beavers scored the 10 runs on eight hits and an error.

Seth Lopez had two of the Rams five hits for the game. Hill, Smith and Hancox each had a hit. Beavers accumulated 18 hits.

Lopez and Hancox scored for the Rams and Diaz picked up an RBI.

Coming up – Rams are back home on Saturday, March 21 to face Wisconsin Lutheran in a doubleheader at Ash Park Field. Game one starts at noon.
