MOUNT VERNON – Reigning NCBWA National Pitcher of the Week
Logan Gannon tossed seven scoreless innings in Saturday's 12-7 Game 2 victory over Wisconsin Lutheran to help Cornell's baseball team salvage a home-opening split at Ash Park Field.
The visiting Warriors (4-8) took the opener, 10-1. The teams face off in the rubber game of the series at 11 a.m. Sunday in Mount Vernon.
The Rams (7-7) have split all six doubleheaders they've played this season.
Fresh off an 18-strikeout performance in Florida last week, Gannon punched out eight Wisconsin Lutheran batters Saturday while scattering only four hits. Gannon (2-1) left the game with a 7-0 lead.
The Rams tacked on five important insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth, keyed by a two-run single from
Lucas Head and a two-run double from
Janiel Cotto.
No. 3 hitter
Thomas Hunt went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and four RBIs to lead Cornell's 12-hit attack. The senior also came onto the mound to record the final two outs in the ninth.
Luke Hull had two hits, including a double.
Jasper Hancox drove in two runs and
Elias Diaz scored three times.
The Rams were held to five hits against Wisconsin Lutheran ace Cody Fredrick in Game 1.
Seth Lopez tripled and scored on a
Jimmy Moltini hit for Cornell's lone run in the seventh. It was the first earned run Fredrick had allowed this season in 17.2 innings.
Wisconsin Lutheran broke the game open with a five-run fifth frame against Cornell starter
Nate Pacetti (1-2), who yielded just five hits over six innings.
