MOUNT VERNON – Trailing 4-2 at half, Cornell scored eight goals in the second half Wednesday at Van Metre Field at Ash Park to secure the victory in their conference opener against Marian, 10-4.
Cornell (3-2, 1-0 NACC) took the early lead when
Kaden Weaver found the back of the net midway through the first quarter, with the first of his three goals. Marian (0-3, 0-1 NACC) answered with two goals of their own.
Charley Kobets scored the first of his four goals at the 6:32 mark of the second quarter to tie up the game, 2-2. Kobets goal was assisted by
Kayden Kuan. The Sabres scored twice late in the quarter to take the lead into halftime.
The Rams came out of halftime fired up, scoring six times in the third period. Kobets and Weaver each scored twice for Cornell.
Xavier Higgins and
Alexander Dukatz each found the back of the net once.
Higgins scored his second goal of the game in the fourth and Kobets finished the scoring with 3:09 to go in the game.
Kuan finished with two assists for the Rams.
Caden Lynch,
Brandon Evilsizer and Dukatz had one a piece.
Ben Wojewski won 13-of-16 face offs and picked up seven ground balls for Cornell.
Ace Rivera and
Brandon Warnke each picked up six ground balls.
Ben Schwartz and Rivera caused two turnovers each.
Goalie
Nathan Diveley played 57 minutes in the net to pick up the win. Diveley finished with eight saves.
Elias Notsch finished out the game at goalie.
Coming up – Rams travel to Appleton, Wisc. on Saturday to face conference foe Lawrence (3-4, 0-2 NACC). Game time is 1:00 pm.
