BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – Cornell's women's lacrosse team caught some misfortune in the final stages of Wednesday's 11-10 loss to Illinois Wesleyan on a foggy night at Tucci Stadium.
The Rams (0-3) were on the cusp of their first win of the season when
Hailey Sieler deposited an assisted goal from
Sabrina Ibanez that put Cornell ahead 10-9 with 1:28 remaining.
Illinois Wesleyan (3-2) answered quickly with the tying score with 59 seconds left. The Titans then completed their late flurry with the winning goal on a shot that deflected off the post and squeezed past Cornell goalie
Hannah Miech with 37 seconds remaining.
It was the fourth lead change of the tight contest that was 5-5 at halftime and 7-7 through three quarters.
Senior
Sabrina Ibanez paced Cornell's attack with three goals and an assist. First-years
Cassie Clay and
Evi Reedy pitched in two goals apiece, while
Ava Ferencz,
Brynn Miroslavich and Sieler each scored once.
Kailey McFarlin posted a team-best four caused turnovers. Miech finished with eight saves and five ground balls over 60 minutes.
The Rams outshot the home team, 33-27. The Titans scored three man-up goals to Cornell's one.
Coming up – The Rams begin their spring break trip Tuesday with an 11 a.m. game against 2025 NCAA qualifier Husson in Hilton Head, S.C.
